The magazine <\/span><\/span>UMH Sapiens<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a> , a popular science publication of the <\/span><\/span>Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez University<\/span><\/span><\/a> ,<\/span><\/span><\/strong> dedicates its <\/span><\/span>43rd<\/span><\/span><\/strong> issue to the <\/span><\/span>SATDI (<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a> Technical Support Service for the Development of Scientific Equipment) in its article <\/span><\/span>\u201cWhen Science Breaks Down.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/strong> The report, written by journalist <\/span><\/span>Diego de la Encina Rodr\u00edguez<\/span><\/span><\/strong> , reflects on a little-seen but essential aspect of university life: the work of the technical staff who repair, adapt, and maintain scientific equipment.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Repair so that science can continue<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

The intervention of our staff is crucial when laboratory equipment malfunctions. This report highlights repair as an effective, sustainable, and economically responsible alternative, capable of extending the lifespan of complex instruments that are, in many cases, difficult to replace.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Through various real-world examples, the text describes how a breakdown can jeopardize experiments, teaching practices, or entire lines of research. In these contexts, the technical analysis, accumulated experience, and adaptability of our technicians allow them to find solutions that are not always available in manuals or commercial services.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Diagnosis, knowledge, and technical creativity to save time and costs<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

One such case is that of Professor <\/span><\/span>Ricardo Mallavia<\/span><\/span><\/strong> ‘s laboratory , where essential equipment malfunctions due to pressure and temperature issues. In this and all other situations, our technical staff always investigates the fault, tests various solutions, and ultimately resolves the problem through precise adjustments and modifications, often avoiding the need for complete device replacement.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Most of the equipment that arrives at the SATDI (Technical Assistance and Repair Service Center) is old, modified for very specific uses, or lacks external technical support. In this context, the technicians must understand the internal workings of the devices, identify defective components, and <\/span><\/span>design customized solutions, even when no technical documentation is available.<\/span><\/span><\/strong> Difficult, but not impossible for truly dedicated workers.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

As the report indicates, <\/span><\/span>it’s not a matter of superpowers, but rather having the right tools and specialized knowledge, along with an innate curiosity<\/span><\/span><\/strong> to perform the job correctly. This work requires time, precision, and a deep understanding of the systems they work with, as well as <\/span><\/span>close collaboration with the research staff.<\/span><\/span><\/strong> Because the time equipment is out of service has a direct impact on scientific activity, repairs not only represent cost savings, but also a guarantee of continuity for teaching and research.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A multidisciplinary and reference work for the university community<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

The work of SATDI, with its multidisciplinary technicians across the UMH campuses, sustains the daily operation of laboratories and workshops in <\/span><\/span>all areas of knowledge<\/span><\/span><\/strong> , making it a fundamental pillar for the university community. It is this behind-the-scenes, often unseen work that sets the pace of science and determines its future. Our department would like to thank <\/span><\/span>UMH Sapiens and the <\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0Communication, Marketing, and Student Services Department<\/span><\/span><\/strong> for highlighting the technical work that supports teaching and research at UMH and for their commitment to science outreach.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
