The technicians of the Technical Support Service for Teaching and Research (SATDI) of the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) of Elche, Alejandro Javaloy Ballestero and Sergio Alejandro Martín Estrada, have completed a training stay at the Hochschule der Medien (Stuttgart Media University), within the ERASMUS PTGAS mobility program.
During their visit, the technicians saw first-hand the advanced audiovisual facilities of the German university. The experience, in addition to being educational, has served to establish ties of collaboration between both institutions.
A technical tour of the Stuttgart sets
Stuttgart Media University has three main sets, each specialized in different audiovisual formats:
- Set 1, measuring about 10×10 meters, is equipped with a green cyclorama and a large 6×3 meter LED screen (still in the installation phase). It has a modern lighting system controlled by Ethernet networks using DMX and ArtNet protocols, which allows precise and flexible management.
- Set 2, designed for cinema, is the largest (10×20 meters) and has a cinema-sized projection screen and a Dolby Atmos surround sound system with ceiling and wall speakers. It also has retractable stands and a mobile structure to optimize space during recordings.
- Set 3, dedicated to television production, includes fixed news-type scenery, a 3×2 meter video wall and several ENG cameras. It is managed from a high-end technical control, valued at more than one million euros, similar to that used by German regional public television.
In addition, all the sets are completely painted black, with visible acoustic treatment and without false ceilings, which leaves all the electrical, air conditioning and lighting control installations visible.
Cutting-edge technology in every corner
All the spotlights used are LED type, mounted on both suspended trusses and tripods with diffusion windows. The trusses, some motorized, are about 4.5 meters high and can only be operated by specialized technicians. They also have an elevated platform and an electric forklift for complex jobs.
Among other notable rooms, the technicians visited:
- A color grading room, equipped with monitors, color control console and multi-channel sound.
- An audio mixing room with Dolby Atmos system and projection on fabric.
- A loan warehouse very similar to the one in the Atzavares building, although with longer terms and kits prepared for off-campus filming. They also lend out small portable video mixers for complex off-set practices.
An enriching experience
Those responsible for SATDI value this visit very positively, both for the quality of the facilities and the treatment received. The stay not only served to learn about cutting-edge audiovisual technology, but also to share experiences and work models with the German technical team, something really relevant for the launch of the new Perleta building, which will have similar features to its German colleagues.
Furthermore, during their stay in Stuttgart, the technicians were also able to get to know the city and enjoy some cultural activities, making this stay a complete experience on a professional and personal level.
