Almost half of the food consumed in Spain contains pesticide residues
Ecologists in Action has warned in its report, “Straight to Your Hormones 2026,” that 46% of food consumed in Spain contains traces of at least one pesticide, a figure that rises to 69% in the case of fruit. The study, based on data from the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) for 2024, detected 127 different substances in the products analyzed.
These include 59 pesticides banned in the European Union, 48 endocrine disruptors, and 14 PFAS compounds, all associated with risks to health and the environment. Furthermore, 32% of the samples showed multiple pesticide contamination, with several pesticides present in the same food item.
The organization recommends prioritizing the consumption of local and seasonal products to reduce exposure to these substances, as imported foods have a higher concentration of pesticide residues. It also calls for greater institutional support to promote toxin-free farming practices and demands stricter controls on unauthorized pesticides.
